Yesterday was a beautiful sunny weather and so we decided to take a little walk outside the city center of Delft. Here's what we saw:

Hairdresser with traffic lights - this is very common in Holland. If it stands on red, it means no use just walking in for a quick cut; on orange you might get in and when the traffic light's on green you can freely walk in and be sure to get a haircut (in exchange for money of course).

Today I went to feed the duckies with my daughter and just in case took my camera with me. I've been struggling a little with this blog lately, but for some reason I felt inspired today and so we did a massive walk and saw a little of this and a little of that. Here are the highlights of our walk today:

First, the inspiring duck.

And I also saw another cliché: windmills.

We have internet since today, it said and the whole place was filled with people and their laptops.

Everyone should know Bill Clinton has eaten poffertjes (small Dutch pancakes) here.

I saw very first of spring today.

I want nothing but McCain, it says. McCain is a producer of french fries in Holland, but I never eat anything but Aviko (another brand), just in case. Also note the pretty poster on the wall.

It was market day today.

This small alley reminded me of spring for some reason.

Here are some photos that I've taken since I started this blog, but never made it till publishing. This is my apology for not updating Delft Daily Photo in a while, and also a little Christmas present for all loyal readers. Hopefully I will have more energy in the beginning of next year to find more beautiful things to photograph.

Day 95: Stop!

Stop! The center of Delft is traffic protected mostly with these stop thingies. You need to have a separate key to get the middle one go down. I know a person who thought he could easily drive after a car that had a key without any damage to his car, but he was wrong. His car got lifted up.

Stop! Delftin keskustaa suojaa liialliselta autoliikenteeltä tämmöiset tolppaset. Keskustaan ajaakseen tarvitsee erillisen avaimen, jotta keskimmäinen tolppa laskeutuisi. Tunnen yhden tyypin joka kuvitteli voivansa ajaa auton perässä, joka laski mennessään tolpan, mutta hän oli väärässä. Hänen autonsa nousi ilmaan keskimmäisen tolpan voimasta.

Day 94: Light bulbs

Light bulbs. It's almost as if there was a roof made of light bulbs and it sure looks nice. On the left the red small building was already the topic on Day 15.

Day 91: Zigzag

Zigzag. The only quiet street in the center, already meantioned at Day 12; Kromstraat had only one wanderer during the busiest evening of the week. Nonetheless the lights created a very special mood already for a very special street in the city.

Siksakkia. Ainoa hiljainen keskustan katu, jo aiemmin mainittu 12. Päivän kuvan Kromstraatin yhteydessä piti kadullaan vain yhden kuljeksijan viikon kiireisimpänä iltana. Siitä huolimatta valot loivat erityisen ilmapiirin jo valmiiksi erikoiselle kaupungin kadulle.

Spooky Old Church. Last night the mist was back. It arrived rather late and was gone before morning, but it sure made the side of the Old Church look rather spooky.

Sunset. The sun was setting a quarter to five and the last rays bounced from some windows. I thought it looked beautiful.

Day 86: Winter wonderland

Winter wonderland. It was snowing today for hours. Most of the snow melt off as soon as it hit the ground, but luckily some of it also decided to stick a little longer. The subject (The East Port) was already used on Day 29, but this time the summer glow has gone and winter has taken its place.

Talven ihmemaa. Tänään satoi lunta tuntikausia. Valtaosa lumesta suli samantien maahan osuessaan, mutta onneksi osa lumesta jäi hieman pidemmäksi aikaa. Kuvan aihe (Itäportti) on käytetty kertaalleen 29. kuvauspäivänä, mutta tällä kertaa kesäisen hohdon tilalla on talvinen tunnelma.

Day 85: Sinterklaas in Delft

Sinterklaas in Delft. Sinterklaas, the Dutch version of Santa Claus arrived today in Delft. The parade was rather big and there were tons of people who had come to see a glimpse of Sinterklaas.

Sinterklaas Delftissä. Sinterklaas, tuo hollantilainen versio Joulupukista saapui tänään Delftiin. Paraati oli melko iso ja paikalla oli hirmuinen määrä ihmisiä, jotka tulivat näkemään edes vilauksen Sinterklaasista.

Market day. Thursday, the big market day of Delft was here once again. And once again I went to see some local products (and also not so local), despite of that I didn't end up buying anything, just taking pictures.

Markkinapäivä. Torstai eli Delftin iso markkinapäivä oli tänään taas täällä. Ja jälleen kerran menin katselemaan paikallisia tuotteita (ja myös ei-niin-paikallisia), siitä huolimatta en päätynyt ostamaan mitään, vain ottamaan kuvia.

Day 82: Boat tour

Boat tour. Anyone up for a boat tour? Amazingly yes, even though there are only a few canals big enough for these boats in Delft, still boat touring seems to be rather popular during the warmer season.

Venekierros. Haluaako joku opastetulle venekierrokselle? Yllättävää kyllä, vaikka Delftissä on vain muutama riittävän iso kanaali näille veneille, siitä huolimatta venekierros näyttää olevan melko suosittua turistien keskuudessa lämpimämpänä aikana vuodesta.

The last of autumn. The trees are nearly finished with dropping leaves this year and this is the result on the ground. The photo was taken somewhat outside the city center, somewhere close to Rotterdamseweg.

Viimeinen pala syksyä. Puut ovat jokseenkin loppusuoralla lehtien varisuttamisen kanssa ja tässä tulos maahan katsottuna. Kuva on otettu hieman keskustan ulkopuolella, jossain Rotterdamsewegin läheisyydessä.

Day 79: Sinterklaas

Sinterklaas. The Dutch version of Santa Claus, Sinterklaas arrived last Saturday and you can see his popularity just by doing a little window shopping. This Sinterklaas-filled window can be spotted at Brabantse Turfmarkt.

Sinterklaas. Hollannin versio Joulupukista, Sinterklaas saapui viime lauantaina ja Joulu-ukon suosion voi bongata vain katselemalla hieman kauppojen ikkunoita. Tämä Sinterklaas-täyteinen ikkuna löytyy Brabantse Turfmarktilta.

Day 78: French fries

French fries. Talk about globalization: French fries sold by a Vietnamese guy in the middle of Holland and bought by a Finnish girl. Well this time I passed the fries (which obviously you eat with mayo since you are in Holland), but I sure love those Dutch style French fries.

Ranskalaisia. Onko tämä globalisaatiota: olet suomalainen ja ostat ranskalaisia vientamilaiselta keskellä Hollantia. No tällä kertaa jätin ranskalaiset välistä (jotka luonnollisesti pitää syödä majoneesin kanssa Hollannissa), mutta edes ajatus kyseisestä ranskalaistuubista saa sylkirauhaset aktiiviseksi.

Day 76: Heart in the moonlight

Heart in the moonlight. The heart glowing a subtle blue light and the pale moon shining its clinical light over Delft was so beautiful that I had to stop and take a photo.

Sydän kuunvalossa. Sinistä valoa hohtava sydän ja kalpean kuun kliininen valo Delftin yllä oli jotain niin kaunista, että piti ihan pysähtyä ja napsaista valokuva.

Grandpas. The photo was taken in front of the old city hall of Delft. I especially like the old guy with a scooter. Such an Italian feeling in the middle of Holland. And if you pay a little more attention, you can see the guy on the right is wearing wooden shoes. Not so Italian after all.

Papat. Kuva on otettu Delftin vanhan raatihuoneen edessä. Itse tykkään erityisesti skootterin päällä istuvasta vanhasta miehestä. Jotenkin niin italialainen tunnelma keskellä Hollantia. Ja jos kiinnität vähän enemmän huomiota, huomaat että oikeanpuolimmaisella papalla on puukengät jalassa.

Day 70: Chilly

Chilly. Since we have been having so many chilly and misty days lately, I use this opportunity to photograph misty Delft as much as possible. The photo was taken at Brabantse Turfmarkt.

Vilpoista. Koska meillä on ollut niin useita vilpoisia ja sumuisia päiviä, käytän tätä mahdollisuutta valokuvata utuista Delftiä niin usein kuin mahdollista. Kuva on otettu Brabantse Turfmarktilla.

Day 69: Christmas lights

Christmas lights. Dutch Christmas is almost here and Sinterklaas is sailing all the way from Spain to Holland next week. Therefore we start celebrating christmas a little earlier than rest of the western world. These beautiful lights can be found behind the central market place of Delft.

Jouluvalot. Hollantilainen Joulu on melkein ovella ja Sinterklaas purjehtii aina Espanjasta Hollantiin saakka jo ensi viikolla. Sen puolesta me aloitamme joulujuhlinnat hieman aiemmin kuin muut länsimaat. Nämä kauniit jouluvalot löytyvät Delftin keskustorin takamailta.

Day 68: Through the window

Through the window. The ladder leaning on the house can be there for two reasons (that I was able to come up with):
1) The residents are washing their windows
2) The residents are moving
Sometimes in Holland when your staircase is too narrow, but your windows are wide enough, moving your furniture in and out can happen like this. It's definitely a better solution than cutting the furniture into pieces, but it can get quite expensieve and obviously there is a load of work.

Ikkunan kautta. Taloon nojaavat tikkaat ovat paikalla jommasta kummasta syystä (ainakin näin minä epäilen):
1) Asukkaat pesevät ikkunoitaan
2) Asukkaat muuttavat
Hollannissa joskus kun porraskäytä on liian kapea, mutta ikkunat tarpeeksi leveitä, huonekalujen muutto sisään tai ulos tapahtuu tällä tavalla. Kysymyksessä on ehdottomasti parempi ratkaisu kuin esimerkiksi huonekalujen pilkkominen palasiksi, mutta hommalle voi tulla melko lailla hintaa ja luonnollisesti siinä on myös aika paljon tekemistä.

Day 67: Sleepy Delft

Sleepy Delft. If yesterday was misty, today was supermisty. The mist hung out all day and increased by the end of it. Mist always reminds me of the movie Sleepy Hollow, but thank goodness there were no headless horsemen galloping around the central market place of Delft.

Uinuva Delft. Jos eilinen oli sumuinen, tämä päivä oli supersumuisa. Usva roikkui kaupungin yllä koko päivän ja lisääntyi iltaa kohden. Sumu muistuttaa minua aina elokuvasta Päätön ratsumies, mutta luojan kiitos Delftin keskustorilla ei sentään laukkaillut päättömiä hevosmiehiä.

Day 66: Ducks of the mist

Ducks of the mist. The day was very misty, the air was so humid that everywhere it looked like it had rained. We went to see some duckies: a big part of them hangs around the canal next to Hema's department store where the photo was also taken.

Sumun ankat. Päivä oli erittäin utuinen, ilma oli niin kosteaa että joka puolella näytti siltä kuin olisi satanut. Menimme katsomaan ankkaloita, joista suuri osa hengailee Heman tavaraton viereisessä kanaalissa, jossa kuva on myös otettu.

Day 65: Modern parking

Modern parking. Sometimes when all the parking spots are taken, you are left with no other choice than park your bike like this. Or maybe some crazy student parties have something to do with how those two unfortunate bikes ended up there. Needless to say, it is not nicely done, but at least it delivered a nice photo. The photo was taken next to the old cityhall of Delft.

Nykyparkkausta. Joskus kun kaikki parkkipaikat ovat varattuja, ei ole muuta vaihtoehtoa kuin parkata pyörä kuvan osoitamalla tavalla. Tai sitten joillain opiskelijabileillä on ollut jotain tekemistä asian kanssa. Sanomattakin selvää, että eipä tuo kivasti ole tehty, mutta ainakin sain hyvän aiheen valokuvaukseen. Valokuvattu Delftin vanhan raatihuoneen kulmilla.

Day 63: An evening in Delft

An evening in Delft. I'm back and while I was gone two things have happened in Delft:
1) It has become much darker
2) The autumn is soon gone and therefore the weather is quite chilly
But I love it, I love this time of a year. The picture was taken around 6 o'clock in front of the library of Delft.

Ilta Delftissä. Olen tullut takaisin ja kun olin poissa Delftissä oli tapahtunut seuraavat kaksi asiaa:
1) On tullut huomattavasti pimeämpää
2) Syksy on pian mennyt ja sää on sen mukaan melko vilpoisa
Mutta rakastan tätä vuodenaikaa. Valokuva on otettu kuuden maissa Delftin kirjaston edessä.

Day 62: Obama

Obama. Yet another Obama poster. This one you can find at the central market square of Delft. I haven't seen a poster of McCain here and thankfully I don't think we'll be seeing one of those in Delft at all. From tomorrow on Delft Daily Photo will be on a break until the end of this month.

Obama. Taas yksi Obama-juliste. Tämä juliste roikkuu eräässä ikkunassa Delftin torilla. En ole vielä koskaan törmännyt McCainin julisteeseen täällä ja uskon että semmoista emme tule edes näkemään Delftissä lainkaan. Huomisesta lähtien Delft Daily Photo on tauolla kuun loppuun saakka.

Day 61: de Kaerskorf Antiguiteiten

De Kaerskorf Antiguiteiten is an antique souvenir shop in the heart of Delft, which sells bits and pieces from the history of Holland, such as old wooden shoes, old style ice skates, pottery and other traditional items. The shop is located between the fish market and the central market place.

De Kaerskorf Antiguiteiten on Delftin sydämessä sijaitseva antiikkimatkamuistomyymälä, joka kauppaa pieniä palasia Hollannin historiasta, kuten vanhoja puukenkiä, vanhanaikaisia luistimia, keramiikkaa ja muita perinteisiä tavaroita. Myymälä sijaitsee kalatorin ja keskustorin välimailla.

Day 60: Busy Delft

Busy Delft. This is a very typical shot of the center of Delft. I find it nice to be able to photograph swans, bikes, buildings, water, people and above all dynamic life in one shot.

Eläväinen Delft. Valokuva on tyypillinen otos Delftin keskustasta. Minusta on mukavaa kun voin kuvata joutsenia, polkupyöriä, rakennuksia, vettä, ihmisiä ja kaikista tärkeimpänä elävää elämää yhteen otokseen.

Day 59: Delft Blue mosaic

Tunnel. Most tunnels I know in Delft are glued full of all sorts of posters and this tunnel is no exception in the bunch. But this particular tunnel has an unique twist: if you pay close attention, you can see that the decorative mosaic is adapting the spirit of the city with a little Delft Blue.

Tunneli. Useimmat tuntemani delftiläiset tunnelit ovat liimattu täyteen erilaisia postereita, eikä tämä tunneli ole joukossa poikkeus. Mutta tässä nimenomaisessa alikulkutiessä on ainutlaatuinen piirre: jos katsot kuvaa tarkemmin, näet että koristeellinen mosaiikki mukailee kaupungin tunnelmaa Delftin Sinistä käyttäen.

Day 58: Yellow walls

To the daylight. This beautiful entrance can be found in the center of Delft. The black gate and those yellow walls leading to a courtyard are the only pretty things in that particular area, since everything else in the courtyard is just metallic and gray.

Päivänvaloon. Tämä kaunis sisäänkäynti johtaa deltiläiselle sisäpihalle aivan kaupungin keskustassa. Musta portti ja keltaiset seinät ovat paikan ainoa kaunis juju, sillä kaikki muu sisäpihalla on metallista ja harmaata.

Crowd. It's Saturday and the center gets stuffed with people. Everybody's shopping and you have to queue for everything.

Day 54: Bike lanes

Bike lane. As you can see, bikes have their own lanes in Holland. Besides their own lanes, the bikers also have their own traffic lights, which makes it less chaotic to go cycling, as sometimes (most of the times) there are herds of people travelling by bikes.

Day 53: Trash day

Trash day. Wednesdays are trash days at least in this part of the city. Here's how the system works: we take our garbage bags on the street and a garbage truck passes by collecting the bags. Without much chance of recycling we put almost all the trash in the same bag, but fortunately there are few ways to recycle in Delft. For example these containers in the picture are for recycling glass. The container goes a few meters underground, so it is far more spacious than what it first might seem. There are also separate containers for paper trash and so, but we are lucky to have paper trash day on Tuesdays, so we don't need to take our recycled paper further than our front door.

Roskapäivä. Keskiviikot ovat ainakin tässä osassa Delftiä roskapäiviä. Homma toimii näin: viemme roskapussit kadulle ja roska-auto ajaa ohi keräten jätesäkit kyytiin. Laitamme melkein kaikki roskat samaan pussiin ilman sen kummoisempia mahdollisuuksia lajitella, mutta onneksi Delftistä löytyy muutamia kierrätyspisteitä. Esimerkiksi valokuvan säiliöt ovat kierrätettävälle lasille. Säiliö ulottuu muutaman metrin maan alle, joten sen on huomattavasti tilavampi miltä aluksi saattaa näyttää. Lähialueellamme on myös muutama säiliö mm. paperiroskalle, mutta olemme onnekkaita, sillä tiistai on paperiroskapäivä, joten meidän ei tarvitse viedä paperiroskaa etuovea kauemmaksi.

House of Vermeer. This is the place where there used to be a house where the Delftian painter Johannes Vermeer lived at the 17th century. Vermeer painted only somewhat 40 paintings during his life and the most famous of all must be The Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Day 50: Vending machines

Vending machines. Grocery store C1000 has another uniqueness other than the self-service check-out counters posing as the picture of the day 10. After the cash registers there is a special area reserved for a dozen vending machines. Here you can buy some items you can also find in the store (e.g. ice cream, sodas), but also items that aren't to be found in the store itself (e.g. cigarettes or ink for different types of printers). Some of the vending machines work only with a receipt that you get at the cash register, but most of them work with conventional methods: put the money in, wait for the spin spin spin and get your stuff out.

Automaatit. Ruokakauppa C1000:ssa on jotain muutakin yksilöllistä kuin itsepalvelukassat, jotka esittelin kymmenentenä päivän kuvana. Kassojen ulkopuolella on varattu alue tusinalle automaatille. Sieltä voit ostaa joitakin asioita, joita myydään myös kaupassa (kuten jäätelöä ja limppareita), mutta myös asioita, joita itse kauppa ei myy (kuten tupakkaa tai mustetta erilaisiin tulostimiin). Simon Lévelt. A beautiful store that sells coffee, tea, cups, pots and pretty much anything necessary to make your coffee/tea break of the day a little more pleasant. This is one of my favourite stores in Delft to make some window shopping. The store is located right next to the central market square.

Patrolmen on wheels. I don't know how these wheel machines are called, but I was rather perplexed when I saw police officers riding these thingies at the market today. Horses and bikes are also used by the patrolmen in the city center of Delft, so at least we can say we have very nature friendly patroling going on in Delft.

Poliisimiehet renkailla. En tiedä miksi näitä rengaslaitteita kutsutaan, mutta olin melko hämmästynyt kun törmäsin tänään markkinoilla vekottimilla ajeleviin poliiseihin. Water taxi. Drives through the small canals of Delft, sometimes under such low bridges that the passengers must duck down in order to avoid brain damage. A nice and affordable way of exploring the city, but running only during the summer.

Willem van Oranje. Also known as Willem de Zwijger (William the Silent), the 16th century Dutch prince who led the resistance against the Spanish king. The start of the Dutch royal family Willem van Oranje is even celebrated today as the colour orange is the national colour of the Netherlands. One statue of Willem de Zwijger can be found in a small courtyard in the old part of Delft.

Willem van Oranje. Myös tunnettu nimellä Willem de Zwijger (Hiljainen Viljami) oli 1500-lukulla elänyt hollantilainen prinssi, joka johti vastarintaliikettä Espanjan kuningasta vastaan. Flower market. Every Thursday the market square of Brabantse Turfmarkt hosts a small flower market selling seasonal flowers and plants. As you can see, autumn is presented in the photo with those beautiful orange pumpkins. Thursday is a market day also at the central square, except for today when the funfair occupies the entire square and the market has temporarily moved closer to the railway station.

Kukkatori. Torstaisin Brabantse Turfmarktin tori muuttuu kukkatoriksi, jossa myydään kausittaisia kukkia ja muita kasveja. Kuten näkyy, valokuvassa syksy on edustettuna vuodenaikana kauniiden oranssien kurpitsojen muodossa. Buildings. Delft, also known as a miniature of Amsterdam is a good example of central European style of architecture. Narrow houses with big windows and loads of stairs. Some parts of the centre also cutely combine old houses with modern first floor stores.

Rakennukset. Delft, myös tunnettu pienoiskokoisena Amsterdamina on hyvä esimerkki keski-eurooppalasesta arkkitehtuurista. Kapeita taloja isoine ikkunoineen ja huimasti portaita. Vermeer cubes. These cubes are found here and there in the center area of Delft, mainly between the Old Church and the New Church. Each cube tells something about the 17th century Delftian painter Johannes Vermeer (most known on the painting "Girl with a pearl earring"). Vermeer is probably the most famous person from this city.

De Delftse IJssalon. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! This super delicious variety of ice creams can be found at the central market place of Delft. Hot days you can spot the place just by searching for the longest queue. How would you like pistacchio ice cream with a little yoghurt and stracciatella on the side? Or why not to go with lemon, chocolate and hazelnut ice cream?

Marching band. Today the center was filled with a couple of dozen marching bands and the audience was also very numerous. The happening is called Tap toe Delft where bands from all around Holland are compiting against each other.

Fish market. This market is probably the easiest market to find eyes closed, as the distinctive smell of fish hangs in the air all around the fish corner. As you can see in the picture, the variety is more than just salmon. Lekker! (Lekker = Dutch word for delicious when talking about food.)

Balloons. The central market place had hundreds of seats surrounding it and the construction was still busy when I happened to pass by. Day 32: Oude Delft

Oude Delft - Old Delft. As the name already reveals, de oude Delft is the old part of the city with old buildings and apparently also with old style curtains hanging (which I personally like most in the picture!). In the old part of Delft you can find for example the Old Church and some old buildings that used to hold the government of Holland during the 16th century.

Oude Delft - Vanha Delft. Kuten nimikin paljastaa, kysymyksessä on Delftin vanha kaupunginosa vanhoine rakennuksineen ja näköjään myös vanhanmallisine verhoineen (joka oli mielestäni kuvan mukavin juttu!). Delftin vanhasta kaupungista voit löytää mm. Vanhan Kirkon ja rypäleen rakennuksia, joissa 1500-luvulla majaili jopa itse Hollannin hallitus.

The Heart of Delft. This blue glass heart, which is literally the heart of Delft you can find close to the central market place. Locals mostly call it the testicles of Delft, but hopefully not everyone see it that way.

The East Port of Delft. This historical gate of Delft used to be one of the entrances to the city and it serves the same purpose even today. You can walk or drive your bike through the gate, but none of the heavier traffic go through this narrow gate.

Someone's back yard. It's not a famous place in Delft, I simply just thought it looked pretty. My favourite thing in the photo is the red flowers in an old milk container. So cute! ps. If you look closely, you can even see a bird in the picture.

Day 24: Railway station

Railway station of Delft. Often mentioned in this blog, not much seen, here it finally is. In the photo you can see the main entrance of the station. The station is located about 5-10 minutes walk from the city center of Delft. The building is old but beautiful, and not too big at all as the station holds only two platforms in total.

Delftin rautatieasema. Usein tässä blogissa mainittu, mutta vähän nähty ja vihdoin täällä. Kuvattu kohde on aseman pääsisäänkäynti. Asema sijaitsee noin 5-10 minuutin kävelymatkan päästä Delftin keskustasta. Rakennus on vanha ja kaunis, eikä lainkaan liian iso, sillä laitureita Delftin pysäkiltä löytyy vain kaksi.

Day 23: Il Tartufo

Il Tartufo (=truffle). This wonderful Italian store you can find in the old part of Delft. When I first came across with Il Tartufo, I just couldn't pass it by. The smell of olive oil mixed with herbs, fresh bread, cheese, tomato and garlic was too irresistible to ignore. The store has a fresh counter with different pastas, risottos and other wonderful Italian things to fill your stomach with, but if you don't have time to eat there or pick up fresh food you can also shop for some nice can goods and wines there. Io sono veramente innamorata del Tartufo.

Il Tartufo (=tryffeli). Tämä ihana italialainen kauppa löytyy Delftin vanhasta osasta. Kun kuljin ensimmäistä kertaa Il Tartufon kulmilla, en voinut olla poikkeamatta sisään. Oliiviöljyn tuoksu sekoitettuna yrtteihin, tuoreeseen leipään, juustoon, tomaattiin ja valkosipuliin oli minusta liian vastustamatonta. Kaupasta löytyy tuoretiski, jossa myydään erilaisia pastoja, risottoja ja muita ihania italialaisia juttuja, joilla voit täyttää vatsassasi kurnivan aukon, mutta jos aika ei riitä paikan päällä syömiseen tai tuoreen noutoruoan mukaan ottamiseen, kaupasta löytyy myös mukava valikoima erilaisia purkkitavaraa ja viinejä. Io sono veramente innamorata del Tartufo.

Day 22: Hot day

Hot day. Hot day at Beestenmarkt in the center of Delft. Beestenmarkt (=animal market) used to be a place where animals (mostly cattle) got sold, bought and exchanged. These days the market place is used as an extended terrace for all those dozen cafes around the market.

Kuuma päivä. Kuuma päivä Beestenmarktilla Delftin keskustassa. Beestenmarkt (=nautatori) oli muinoin paikka, jossa eläimiä (pääasiassa nautakarjaa) myytiin, ostettiin ja vaihdettiin. Tänä päivänä tori toimii terassin jatkeena tusinalle kahvilalle torin laidoilla.

Day 21: Hotel de Emauspoort

Hotel de Emauspoort. This idyllic looking hotel is located right next to De Nieuwe Kerk, so it is in the very heart of Delft. Close by you can find various things to see and places to go - the area also hosts a diversity of restaurants and cafes. Personally I have never booked a room here, I just think it looks cute. Day 20: Bikes

Bikes. This immense amount of bikes is probably one of the first things to strike you when you roll your way in Delft by train. The entire railway station is surrounded by parking and storage facilities for bikes, apparently for those people who come from other cities to work here every morning. Bikes are an important part of the traffic too and you can spot all types of people using this cheap, green and efficient way of personal transport in the city.

Polkupyöriä. Tämä valtava määrä polkupyöriä on kenties ensimmäinen vaikuttava asia, joka iskee turistin silmiin hänen rullatessaan junalla kaupunkiin. Koko rautatieaseman ympäristö on täynnä parkki- ja säilytystiloja polkupyörille, luultavammin niille ihmisille jotka tulevat tänne aamuisin töihin muista kaupungeista. Pyörät ovat tärkeä osa myös liikennettä ja voit bongata kaikentyyppisiä ihmisiä käyttämässä tätä edullista, vihreää ja tehokasta henkilökohtaista kulkuvälinettä kaupungissa.

Day 19: Natuurwinkel

Natuurwinkel is one of the nicest stores I've come across while living in Delft. This "Nature Store" sells organic food and other nature friendly goods. The price range is slightly higher compared to a standard supermarket in Delft, but it's only understandable. A small part of the store has been build into an Eetcafe, where you can enjoy organic food, coffee and so on.

Natuurwinkel on yksi kivoimmista kaupoista, joihin olen törmännyt Delftissä asumisen aikoina. Tämä "Luonnon kauppa" myy luomuruokaa ja muita luontoystävällisiä tuotteita. Hintataso on hieman korkeampi perus delftiläiseen supermarkettiin verrattuna, mutta se on mielestäni ymmärrettävää. Day 18: De Oude Kerk

De Oude Kerk (The Old Church). The leaning tower of Delft, also known as The Old Church. It is few centuries older than the New Church (which is also old), but it has been kept in a very pretty condition. Apart from being our own leaning Tower of Pisa, it is also our Eiffel Tower as it is one of the things you see first when you roll in the city by train.

De Oude Kerk (Vanha Kirkko). Delftin kalteva torni, myöskin tunnettu nimellä Vanha Kirkko. Se on muutamaa vuosisataa Uutta Kirkkoa vanhempi (joka on myöskin vanha), mutta sitä on pidetty nätissä kunnossa. Se ei ole pelkästään meidän oma Pisan kalteva tornimme, se on myös meidän oma Eiffel-tornimme, sillä se on yksi ensimmäisistä asioista joita näät rullatessasi junalla kaupunkiin.

Day 17: Graffiti

Graffiti. This particular area you can find close to the railway station of Delft and it is perfectly legal to do your own piece of art here. I was lucky enough to see some artists at work when I passed by.

Graffiti. Tämän nimenomaisen alueen löydät Delftin rautatieaseman läheisyydestä ja tänne piirrustaminen on täysin laillista. Paikan ohittaessani olin tarpeeksi onnekas nähdessäni taiteilijoita itse työssä.

Day 16: Houseboats

Houseboats. Like many of the Dutch cities, also Delft has a small section dedicated to houseboats. The number of the houseboats is small compared to bigger cities like Amsterdam, but the ones in Delft (that I've seen) seem to be in a very good condition. Houseboats are more expensieve than you might think, and they need constant care due to the consuming water surronding them. I secretly dream of living in a houseboat one day, although I know it's not a dream I am likely to realize in the future.

Asuntoveneet. Niin kuin monissa hollantilaisissa kaupungeissa, myös Delftistä löytyy pieni asuntovenetäyteinen kaupunginosa. Lukumäärältään asuntoveneitä on huomattavasti vähemmän esimerkiksi Amsterdamiin verrattuna, mutta ne veneet joita olen Delftissä nähnyt ovat mielestäni melko hyvässä kunnossa. Asuntoveneet ovat kalliimpia kuin saattaisit uskoakaan ja ne tarvitsevat jatkuvaa huoltoa johtuen pääasiassa veden kuluttavasta voimasta. Salaisesti unelmoin asuvani joku päivä asuntoveneessä, mutta tiedän ettei se ole yksi niistä unelmistani jonka todennäköisesti toteutan tulevaisuudessa.

Day 15: Candy Shop Sweets 17

Candy Shop. Only the colour of this building would be enough to attract people over, especially it must intrigue children and I suppose that's the point. The atmosphere in the store is sweet: unique sugary products, wonderful smell and caring service. No reasons like these to shop some candy.

Karkkikauppa. Pelkästään tämän rakennuksen väri riittäisi houkuttelemaan ihmisiä luokseen, erityisesti se suunnitellun varmasti kiehtoo lapsia. Joka tapauksessa kaupan tunnelma on makea: ainutlaatuisia sokerituotteita, ihana tuoksu ja kohtelias palvelu. Minä en ainakaan tarvitse tämän kummempia syitä karkkiostoksiin.

Day 14: Brabantse Turfmarkt

Fruit and vegetable market. On Saturdays one of the central market places Brabantse Turfmarkt turns into a selling market with all kinds of fresh fruit and vegetable from local farmers. Apart from these, there are also separate sections for flowers, underwear, soaps and other stuff, but mostly the market sells edable things. Fruits and vegetables aren't the only delicious things to be sold, as you can also find fresh bread, sweets, cheese and fish there.

Hedelmä- ja vihannestori. Arkisin rauhallinen Brabantse Turfmarkt muuttuu lauantaisin aktiiviseksi toripaikaksi, jossa myydään paikallisten viljelijöiden tuoreita hedelmiä ja vihanneksia. Torilta löytyy myös erilliset kojut kukkamyyjille, alusvaate- ja saippuakauppiaille monesta muusta asiasta puhumattakaan. Pääasiassa torilla myydään kuitenkin vain syötävää: hedelmien ja vihannesten lisäksi torilta voit ostaa myös tuoretta leipää, makeisia, juustoa ja kalaa.

Day 13: The old city hall

The old city hall of Delft. This beautiful building is located in the very heart of Delft. It proudly stands at the central market place facing the De Nieuwe Kerk. Old times used as a city hall, these days it is quite a popular place to get married.

Delftin vanha raatihuone. Tämä kaunis rakennus löytyy aivan Delftin sydämestä ja se seisoo keskustorilla Uutta Kirkkoa (De Nieuwe Kerk) vastapäätä. Muinoin käytetty raatihuoneena, mutta tänä päivänä enemmänkin hääkäytössä.

Day 12: Mural

Mural. This cheerful painting you can find on Kromstraat in the center of Delft. The street itself is very pretty and has a different kind of atmosphere than the rest of the city. Maybe the coffee shop close to this mural has something to do with how it got there in the first place.

Seinämaalaus. Tämä pirteä seinämaalaus löytyy Delftin keskustasta Kromstraat nimiseltä kadulta. Katu itsessään on todella nätti ja kujalla on aina jotekin erilainen ilmapiiri muuhun kaupunkiin verrattuna. Kenties maalauksen läheisyydessä sijaitsevalla coffee shopilla on jotain tekemistä taideteoksen kanssa.

Day 11: Windmill

The behind of a windmill. Since we are in Holland, I cannot leave windmills out of my daily photo project. This particular windmill you can find close to the railway station of Delft (and basically you don't even have to stop in Delft to see this through the train window when you are passing by). I don't think this windmill is in any use these days like most of the traditional windmills in Holland. It's there just to remind what this country is made of, and of course to attract some tourists. And let's face it, it is very pretty!

Tuulimyllyn takapuoli. Koska käsittelemme kuitenkin Hollantia tässä blogissa, en voi jättää tuulimyllyjä mainitsematta. Tämä kyseinen tuulimylly löytyy läheltä Delftin rautatieasemaa (itse asiassa nähdäksesi tuulimyllyn sinun ei edes tarvitse nousta junasta pois, sillä se näkyy Delftin ohittavien junien ikkunoista selvästi). En usko että tämä tuulimylly on enää missään varsinaisessa käytössä näinä päivinä, niin kuin monet Hollannin perinteisistä tuulimyllyistä. Se seisoo paikoillaan vain muistuttamassa mistä tämä maa on tehty. Ja tietenkin, onhan se erittäin nätti!

Day 10: Self-service check-out counters

Self-service check-out counters. One of the biggest supermarkets in the center area of Delft C1000 has something what I call quite unique. This is the only place in the world where I have seen self-service check-out counters. You simply just scan the bar code of the product and put it on the line that automatically rolles it to the other side. When you are done, you pay with a credit card and are allowed to go pack. The lines on these self-service check-out counters are always much shorter than the lines on those traditional real human check-out counters next to them.

Itsepalvelukassat. Yksi Delftin keskustan suurimmista ruokakaupoista C1000:ssa on jotain mitä minä kutsuisin ainutlaatuiseksi. Kauppa on nimittäin ainoa maailmassa, jossa olen toistaiseksi törmännyt itsepalvelukassoihin. Kassa toimii niin, että luetutat laitteella tuotteiden viivakoodit ja laitat tuotteen hihnalle, joka rullaa sen pakkauspäätyyn. Kun ostokset on maksettu kortilla, voit mennä pakkaamaan. Jonot näihin itsepalvelukassoihin ovat aina huomattavasti perinteisiä ihmiskassoja lyhyemmät.

Day 9: The Weather

The weather today has been very bipolar. First it rains, then the sun shines for a while and since we are in Holland, it rains again, and - you guessed it- then the sun shines again. Sudden weather changes are very typical in Holland and Delft is no exception. The photo was taken between Theater De Veste and the public library of Delft.

Sää on ollut tänään varsin maanis-depressiivinen. Ensin sataa taivaan täydeltä, sitten aurinko paistelee hetken ja koska olemme Hollannissa, sade alkaa uudestaan ja voitkin jo arvata, aurinko paistaa sen jälkeen. Äkkinäiset säämuutokset ovat melko tyypillisiä Hollannissa, eikä Delft oli joukossa poikkeus. Valokuva on otettu Theater De Vesten ja Delftin kaupunginkirjaston välissä.

Day 8: Rowing

Rowing. One of the big channels surrounding the city is used as a practise place of the rowers in Delft. Often you can spot them practising in the afternoons and evenings and their energy never seem to run out. Practise does make perfect as today Holland got a gold medal in rowing in Beijing.

Soutu. Yksi suurista Delftiä ympäröivistä kanavista toimii delftiläisten soutajien harjoituspaikkana. Voit usein nähdä heidät harjoittelemassa iltapäivisin ja iltaisin, eikä heidän energiansa näytä koskaan loppuvan. Harjoitus taitaa todellakin tehdä mestarin, sillä tänään Hollanti nappasi soudusta kultamitalin Pekingissä.

Day 7: Obama Citroëns

Obama Citroëns. First there was just this green Citroën with an Obama sticker, then the same family either got a second car, or was able to make their neighbours into Obama fans too. Who knows, maybe these people supporting Obama are Americans, or maybe they are just some Dutch people interested in foreign politics. Nonetheless, I think it's quite cool.

Obama-Sitikat. Ensin paikalla oli vain vihreä Citroën Obama-tarralla varustettuna, sitten sama perhe joko hankki kakkosauton tai onnistui puhumaan naapurinsa myöskin Obaman kannattajaksi. Kuka tietää vaikka nämä ihmiset olisivat amerikkalaisia itse, tai sitten he yksinkertaisesti ovat ulkomaiden politiikasta kiinnostuneita hollantilaisia. Joka tapauksessa minusta tämä on aika siistiä.

Day 6: Albert Heijn

Albert Heijn is one of the biggest grocery store chains in Holland, and also one of my favourites. This one in the very center of Delft is rather small, but no doubt you can find all basic necessities for cooking there, and even more. Their homebrand AH is also rather good, and in this particular store the lines for the cash register are almost always short.

Albert Heijn on yksi Hollannin suurimmista ruokakauppaketjuista ja myöskin yksi minun suosikeistani. Kuvan kauppa sijaitsee Delftin keskustassa ja on kooltaan melko pieni, mutta siitä huolimatta valikoimaltaan hyvä. Kaupan oma tuotemerkki AH on laadullisesti myös hyvä ja kuvan kaupan kassajonot ovat yleensä poikkeuksellisen lyhyet.

Day 5: Parking

Compact parking. Delft, like any other city in Holland is packed with all sorts of small and fast transporters, mostly bikes. But there are also tons of mopeds, scooters and bromfietsen (bikes with a small engine) to be found here and there. Easy driving in a city with narrow alleys and definitely easy parking.

Delft muiden hollantilaisten kaupunkien mukaisesti on täynnä erilaisia nopeita ja pieniä kulkuneuvoja, pääasiassa polkupyöriä. Mutta kaupungista löytyy myös lukuisia mopoja, skoottereita ja moottoroituja polkupyöriä. Helppoa liikkumista kapeakatuisessa kaupungissa ja erityisesti helppoa parkkaamista.

Day 4: Water

Delft is a city of water with dozens of kilometers of canals running through the city. Delft also has a small harbour and therefore good connections to both close, big cities Rotterdam and The Hague by water. The water in the canals is in constant move and the canals themselves support quite a lot of life from different plants and birds to even some fish-type-of-thingies (I don't know if those are edible or not). The picture was taken close to the East Port of Delft.

Kymmenet kilometrit kanaaleita kulkee veden kaupungissa Delftissä. Kaupungista löytyy myös pienehkö satama ja sen puolesta myös hyvät vesiyhteydet molempiin läheisiin suurkaupunkeihin Rotterdamiin ja Haagiin. Kanaalien vesi on jatkuvassa liikkeessä ja kanaaleista löytyy elämänmuotoja erilaisista kasveista ja linnuista aina jonkinsorttisiin kaloihin (joista en osaa sanoa ovatko ne syötävää sorttia vai ei). Day 3: Delft Blue

Delft is famous of a few things in particular, Delft Blue Pottery being one of them. At least half of the stores at the central market place sell either original handpainted Delft Blue, or not so original Delft Blue (which obviously is much cheaper at the price). For more information, click here.

Delft on kuuluisa erityisesti muutamasta asiasta, Delft Blue keramiikan ollessa niistä yksi. Vähintään puolet keskustorin liikkeistä myy aitoa Delftin sinistä käsinmaalattua keramiikkaa, tai ei niin aitoa Delftin sinistä (joka on hintansa puolesta luonnollisesti paljon edullisempaa).
